Description

After visiting the Historical Paper Museum, come get your hands dirty and make your own sheet of paper! (€6.90 per participant) Or let your artistic side shine with a floral arrangement (€25).
Invented by the Chinese more than 2,000 years ago, paper’s journey to the West was a long one. In France, as early as the 14th century, paper replaced parchment, and some 400 mills in Ambert produced it from rags. Located very close to Ambert, the Richard de Bas paper mill keeps the region’s papermaking tradition alive. Situated in the Laga Valley, this venerable mill is the last remaining one in Auvergne, a region where papermaking began in the 14th century. Today, at the Richard de Bas mill, production continues according to traditions as old as the walls themselves. Two hundred sheets leave the workshop every day—sheets that are still made by hand, following a seasonal rhythm in which white, mottled, or colored paper gives way to “flowered” paper made with inclusions and designs of extraordinary diversity. During your visit, you’ll discover the secrets of papermaking—a treasure that artisans have passed down since 1326. You’ll also have the chance to get your hands dirty—literally—during workshops for all ages. It’s your chance to make your very own sheet of paper.
