The goal of this workshop is to make two objects using a scroll saw: a cutting board and a trivet. To achieve this, you will be guided by Gilles, an experienced scroll saw operator.

During the workshop, Gilles will share his technical advice on woodworking and selecting wood. No matter your skill level, this experience will prove to be very rewarding. Here’s what’s on the agenda for this workshop: Gilles will welcome you and introduce you to his workshop, the different types of wood he uses, and the scroll-cutting technique you’ll learn during this workshop. He’ll explain the difference between the two types of saws he uses, which you’ll get to try out. After showing you how the machines work and going over some safety rules, it’s time to get started! Step 1: Exercises. A few practice exercises on plywood to help you get comfortable with the tools. Step 2: The cutting board. Once you’ve mastered the basic techniques, it’s time to get down to business! You’ll craft your cutting board from solid wood that’s about 8 mm thick. You’ll trace the shape onto the wood using a template and cut out what you’ve drawn. Step 3: The trivet. The trivet is a bit more challenging: the wood is 12 mm thick, and in addition to cutting out the outer shape, you’ll be cutting out openwork patterns. Final step: the finish. You’ll sand each piece to give it a beautiful finish!
